Simply Chesterfields
WE MAKE THEM THE OLD WAY
Creating Our Chesterfields . . .
A British Icon
Trends come and go but true style and quality are eternal. An icon of British furniture design known the world over, the Chesterfield sofa certainly falls into that category. A highly distinctive visual design, whose essential characteristics have been preserved for hundreds of years.
Simple Heritage
At Simply Chesterfields we are proud to be handmaking chesterfield sofas right here in England located in the traditional heartland of furniture making. Helping preserve this time-honoured tradition, our workshops have some of the finest furniture makers and upholsters in the country and they love what they do. They put their heart and soul into every piece they create, and you will see and feel it every time you relax in a ‘Simply Chesterfields’ sofa.
Every piece we create is exclusive and handmade just for you, a one-off commission that has its own individual characteristics and charm.
Creating Our Chesterfields . . .
Anatomy
Hundreds of handpicked components go into making one of our chesterfields and only the best make the grade. Using over 80 individual processes, each one is tapped, screwed and fixed by hand, some to give strength and support, others for pure comfort and those delicate finishing touches. An attention to detail that is simply unrivalled.
The Bones
The first step is to make the frame using 100% hardwood, and only 100% hardwood. Our frames are made using solid seasoned beech and birch sourced from sustainable, well-managed forests. The solid wood is slowly kiln-dried which not only increases the strength but also dramatically reduces the chances of creaking caused by years of lounging, all ensuring that our frame literally lasts a lifetime.

Simple Ingredients
Once the solid beech and birch frame has been made, the other ingredients are added, and your new chesterfield sofa will begin to take shape. With comfort being our watchword, the frame is wrapped with a minimum of 4 inches of padding then multiple layers of foam and extra padding are added to build up the comfort levels. Coil or serpentine springs are carefully added to the frame and ‘tied in’ using twine to prevent slipping, ensuring even tension. Support and strength are added to the seat back and seat base using webbing, an excellent material known for its outstanding combination of strength, durability, and flexibility that gives outstanding support and holds up extremely well under pressure. Finally, even more comfort is added with extra foam and padding to create the curves and contours synonymous with a classic chesterfield.

A Tactile Experience
Looks are everything but so is the feel and at Simply Chesterfields, we want our chesterfields not only to look fantastic but also to be a tactile experience. Countless hours have gone into developing our exclusive selection of upholsteries, from our super soft, specially developed leathers to our superior fabrics, all handpicked and selected to blend perfectly with our comfort focused styles of chesterfields.
When the upholstery for your chesterfield is hand-selected it is rigorously checked ready for cutting. The leather hides are selected and matched for consistency of colour and texture, this can be a challenge sometimes as no two hides are the same, but we embrace this as it’s part of what makes our chesterfields unique.

Upholstering
Now the bones have been fleshed out, we will dress your chesterfield in your chosen leather or fabric. Our highly skilled upholsterers use decades of experience manipulating padding, trimming foam, and making small adjustments here and there, to create elegantly shaped rolls and scrolls. Carefully teasing the covering into shape, gently folding, meticulously pleating and fine tweaking to create intricate diamond patterns. Nearly one hundred buttons can be used in a single chesterfield, each one skilfully hand-stitched deep into place using just the right amount of tension, creating soft and even padded diamond shapes that are the hallmark of a chesterfield sofa.

Comfy Cushions
Now comes perhaps one of the most important stages of your new chesterfield, the cushions. As these will be in contact with a delicate area of the body, we must get this just right. There are many different types of foam offering various degrees of comfort and ‘return’, which is the extent, speed and number of times that a cushion ‘returns’ to its original shape. Therefore, we have developed our signature blend of comfort cushioning. A unique composite of varied high-quality grades of foams, fibres, and feathers that we use in our assorted styles of seat and back cushions, each has been tried and tested to create what we believe is the perfect blend of comfort and longevity. All perfectly matched to the style of sofa. Each cushion is cut and shaped to fit perfectly into your new chesterfield making them very much part of the overall uniqueness and character.
