When you have fallen in love with one of our chesterfield sofas, it is important to check it will be happy in its new home and fit in nicely and snugly. We also need to check it will be able to make the journey from your front gate to the room of choice, so read on we have some tricks and tips for you . . .

Sizing Up Your Options

Our chesterfield sofas are designed to glide through a standard-sized door frame and have removable feet to make it easier. With the average opening for a door around 72cm to 80cm - about 30 to 32 inches in old money - our chesterfields with the feet removed, sit on average 68cm, about 27 inches high, so there should be no problems getting them into your home.

Let’s Begin
Note down the size of the chesterfield you have chosen. All the sizes you need are on our website on the product page. Each sofa has an illustration showing all the measurements you need along with the size of the opening required for the item to pass through to gain access. Don’t forget, you can always print out the product page for reference.

measuring up!

Before you start measuring, the first thing to consider is, if it was easy to get your existing furniture in, and if your new chesterfield is the same size or smaller, there should be no problem.

First things first, measure the area where your new chesterfield will live to make sure it will be the perfect fit. If it is going to sit in an alcove or bay window, consider windowsills if they are lower than the sofa, and any skirting boards. If it is a bit tight, it is always best to go for a slightly smaller size. We offer a bespoke service if our standard sizes are not doing the job for you, so just give us a call and we can discuss your requirements – simple.

It is a good idea to create a floor plan to scale or mark out the width and depth of the sofa on the floor using masking tape, it will give you a good idea of the proportions of the sofa in the room. If you are the creative type, you can fashion a handy size guide, using cardboard cut to the same proportions as the sofa. You can then move it about easily and pick the perfect spot  - if you grew up watching Blue Peter, this should be simple enough.

A Simple Guide

The Path To Glory
Now your chesterfield knows its place, it is time to get a bit workman-like and work out the path to glory. Do a walkthrough and measure each doorway, hallway and opening your chesterfield will travel through. It is important to consider any twists and turns and look out for any obstructions like low-hanging light fittings, radiators and wall mounted shelves, mirrors etc. If the narrowest opening is greater than the height of the chesterfield, then it should slide through.

The Front Door
Measure the width of the door frame at its narrowest point. If it is more than the height of your new chesterfield, we are in and past the front door. However, if you have an obstruction behind the door that stops it from opening fully, open the door as wide as possible and measure the narrowest point from the door to the inner frame. Also, check the distance from the edge of the open door to the opposite wall. Again, if the numbers are greater than the height of the sofa, we are in business.

Navigating Hallways & Internal Doors
If you have a narrow hallway and need the sofa to turn into the room of choice, it will be stood up on its end and walked through. Measure the doorway height, if it is greater than the width of the sofa, it will pass through. If not, the sofa will be tilted back into the hallway and slid under the head of the door. If you are unsure or have any concerns your new chesterfield might not make the journey, get in touch and we will work it out for you.

Tight Corners To Get Round
If the corner is too tight for conventional manoeuvres, the same principle as above will apply. The sofa will be stood up vertically on its end and manoeuvred around the corner. Just make sure there is enough height to stand the sofa upright or nearly upright and it will sail through. Just be aware of any obstacles that may hinder its progress such as light fittings, radiators etc.

From The Road
Measure the width of any gates or passageways the chesterfield may have to pass through to get to the access door. Make sure there are no obstacles like bikes, bins etc. that may hinder progress. Please consider whether our delivery team can park immediately outside your property, if there are parking restrictions let us know or arrange a permit. If you have any walls or fences the sofa will need to be lifted over, please let us know in advance as we may need specialist equipment to carry this out.

Getting Upstairs
If your chesterfield needs to make it up the wooden hill, measure the width of the stairs at the narrowest point. Remember to take any handrails or light fitting into account. If the width is greater than the height of your chesterfield, it should have no trouble making the ascent. If your staircase has a turn or landing, using the same principles as manoeuvring around a tight corner, the sofa will be stood up vertically into the stairwell and walked around to continue up. Measure the width, depth and height of the landing or turn and if all the measurements are greater than the dimensions of your sofa, it should be fine.

If you have a bannister the sofa needs to be lifted over, check the distance between the bannister and ceiling is greater than the sofa depth. Finally at the top of the stairs make sure there is enough room to manoeuvre the sofa into the room of choice.

Other considerations

Apartments & Lifts
Does your building have a lift? If so, measure the width, depth, and height to make sure your new chesterfield will fit in. If the dimensions are greater than the width, depth and height of your sofa, it will be fine. Be sure to measure the opening to the lift as they can be quite a bit narrower than the inside width of the lift. If you ensure the path through to your apartment meets all the necessary width, depth and height criteria already discussed and is clear of any obstacles, we should have no issues.

Tight Fit
If you have very narrow doors, incredibly low ceilings, or very restricted hallways, it is going to be a struggle. Our delivery teams are very experienced and have overcome many obstacles to get a chesterfield to where it needs to be. But if the numbers don’t add up, we can always use the double patio door around the back we all forgot about.

Tips from our delivery team

Please remove any breakables like vases and mirrors that are in the way, it doesn’t matter how much space we have, breakables are called breakables because they ‘want’ to be broken.

If you can, cover the floor to protect it from our boots, especially light-coloured carpets and wooden flooring. We can’t remove our footwear, health and safety and all that . . . plus Dave’s feet . . . say no more.

If you have any pets, please keep them out of the way until we have settled in your new chesterfield. Especially cats, they will most definitely want to check out the new arrival and claim the best spot.

Check we have space to park the van, it’s quite big and might struggle if your driveway is a bit narrow or you have restricted access with lots of trees. Let us know beforehand and we can use the smaller van.

Dave Had A Good Idea!
Finally, a very good idea one of our delivery team had was to walk the route the sofa will take from the road to the room of choice using a phone to video it. You can then send it to us with some measurements so we can do a full assessment and be prepared.

If you have any concerns about delivery or are not sure the sofa will fit, please contact us and we will be able to advise you.
